Lawrence Township will hold its second annual memorial service for the 9/11 terror attacks on Sept. 11 at 9 a.m. at the 9/11 Memorial on Pilla Avenue, opposite the headquarters of the Lawrence Township Emergency Medical Services.
Michael Yeh, a retired Lawrence Township police officer, will be the guest speaker. As a member of New Jersey Task Force One, which is an urban search and rescue team, Yeh responded to the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks in New York City.
The public is welcome and encouraged to attend the ceremony. Pilla Avenue is off Lawrence Road/Route 206, near the Lawrence Road Fire Co.
The 9/11 Memorial is a memorial to Lawrence Township’s emergency first responders, and honors them for their dedication and selflessness, said Marie Tagliaferri, who suggested creating the small park and memorial. She is a trustee of the Lawrence Township First Aid Squad.
The memorial is a large slab of stone that is topped off by a 12-inch by 12-inch piece of steel from the World Trade Center. It sits in a small park, across the street from the headquarters of the Lawrence Township Emergency Medical Services – and the former headquarters of the Lawrence Township First Aid Squad.
Four Lawrence Township residents – volunteer members of the Lawrence Township First Aid Squad – responded on Sept. 11 to the terror attack in New York City. The foursome took the squad’s heavy rescue truck and traveled to northern New Jersey.
The four volunteers – Dean Acquaviva, Sue Fabian, Ken Kandrac and David Miele – spent the night and then drove back to Lawrence Township.
The four volunteer emergency medical technicians had set up triage stations to help the injured, but the triage stations were not needed.
