Freehold Township High School educator named Monmouth County Teacher of the Year

A teacher at Freehold Township High School has been named Monmouth County’s Teacher of the Year for the 2019-20 school year.

Elizabeth English has taught English at Freehold Township for 18 years. In August, she was one of 21 teachers (one from each county in New Jersey) who were honored during an awards ceremony at Jackson Liberty High School, Jackson, during the Governor’s Educator of the Year program.

The program promotes a positive school culture by acknowledging the hard work and dedication of outstanding teachers, according to a press release.

Schools are encouraged to nominate exceptional educators with diverse backgrounds to ensure the honorees represent the ethnic and racial diversity of New Jersey, according to the press release.

As an added incentive to participate this year, the New Jersey School Boards Association made it possible for more than 2,400 educators who were named as a local school’s educator of the year to receive free virtual educational resources that will benefit their students.

Commenting on her selection as the Monmouth County Teacher of the Year, English said, “I am incredibly humbled by all the recognition lately. I am honored to represent Freehold Township High School, the Freehold Regional High School District and Monmouth County.

“Although I cannot thank everyone individually, I would like to express appreciation to all my teachers, colleagues, mentors, supervisors, administrators, students and the school community.

“In my journey, I have been blessed to be surrounded by a supportive network of professionals and incredible mentors in life. I share this accolade with all of them because they have been instrumental in my path of growth,” English said.

During her career, English has run professional learning community workshops, written curriculum, participated in the Title I Summer Academy and taken part in other initiatives to enhance her craft.

She mentors new teachers in the Freehold Regional High School District and has served as a Student Council adviser for the majority of her career, helping to organize and execute many events.

English volunteers with Special Strides, an organization that provides animal therapy to students who have special needs. She has coached more than 50 seasons in five sports, including girls tennis, junior varsity girls basketball and softball.

“I was the first teacher in my family, but because of the teachers and coaches I had, I entered the profession with the goal of inspiring children,” English said. “My ability to connect with people is a big reason for my success in the field.

“I go to work every day excited and happy to be around my co-workers and students. I try my best to spread positivity, reinforce good effort, and instill kindness and compassion,” she said.

Freehold Regional High School District Superintendent of Schools Charles Sampson said, “Beth English is an exceptional educator who for years has seen her students meet success. Her recognition as Monmouth County Teacher of the Year is a well-deserved honor.

“Ms. English has been an English teacher in the district since 2001. During that time she has been an invaluable member of the school community, serving in several different roles, including as a dedicated coach and adviser. She has left a memorable mark on her students over the years and we are proud of all her amazing accomplishments.” Sampson said.
