Two Florida men who attempted to flee from police have been charged with multiple criminal charges, including obstruction of justice, assault, receiving stolen property and resisting arrest, according to the Hopewell Township Police Department.

The incident began when a police officer stopped the car, which was occupied by a 19-year-old man and a 31-year-old man, at 11:19 p.m. on Aug. 31 on Bear Tavern Road.

The officer smelled marijuana inside the car and asked the two men to step outside while police searched the car. Police found several credit cards that did not belong to the men.

While police were continuing with the investigation, the two men got back into the car and tried to drive away. The 19-year-old driver was taken out of the car, but the 31-year-old man was able to gain control of the car and tried to drive away.

Several police officers were still inside the car as the 31-year-old man tried to drive off, but they were able to re-gain control of the car and bring it to a stop. The man fled the scene, but was taken into custody several hours later on Scotch Road.

The two men were taken to the Mercer County Corrections Center. The case will be heard in Mercer County Superior Court.
