Matawan enters into shared services agreement with Aberdeen for EMS coverage

MATAWAN–The Borough Council approved a resolution authorizing the municipality to enter into a Shared Services Agreement with the Township of Aberdeen for daytime emergency medical services.

Due to a decrease of service and cost escalation, the council announced that it is desirous of implementing a Shared Services Agreement (SSA) with the Township of Aberdeen to share services and reduce costs by working together to provide for Primary Daytime Emergency Medical Service (EMS) basic life support and ambulance coverage by Hackensack Meridian Health Alert Ambulance Services, Inc.

Mayor Joseph Altomonte said, “We have a volunteer service that needed to be supplemented because if they are not available you have to do something. We do have a volunteer EMS, but they were noticing a decrease in membership so we decided that we needed to supplement them.”

The council approved the resolution entering into an SSA with the Township of Aberdeen for daytime primary EMS coverage on Sept. 3 during the council meeting at the municipal community center.

The cost of the services will be at 60% by 40% cost share, respectively. The Township of Aberdeen will pay 60% of the contract price or $50,400 per year for the services. The borough will pay 40% of the contract price or $33,600 per year for the services, according to the council agenda.

This agreement with commence as of the date executed herein for a term ending on Dec. 31, which will be renewable on an annual basis beginning Jan. 1 of each year, unless either party provides written notice to the other party 90 days prior to the termination date as to their intention not to renew this agreement, according to the council agenda.

Bayshore EMS Chief Tatiana Roser said that Bayshore EMS is a 100% volunteer organization that covers the night shift for the Matawan, Aberdeen and Cliffwood Beach, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
