On Sept. 5, committee members in Upper Freehold Township awarded a $967,800 contract to Asphalt Paving Systems Inc. for improvements on Jonathan Holmes Road. The project will be the second phase of improvements, according to a resolution.

Bids were received and the contract was awarded to Asphalt Paving Systems on the recommendation of Township Engineer Glenn Gerken.

The second phase of improvements to Jonathan Holmes Road will be funded through the New Jersey Department of Transportation (DOT) Municipal Aid Program, according to the resolution.

In 2018, the governing body submitted a grant application and grant agreement with the DOT for the project.

The state funding Upper Freehold received to pursue the phase II improvements on Jonathan Holmes Road includes $225,000 from April.

For the first phase of the improvements in 2018, Upper Freehold received $350,000 from the DOT, as previously reported.

According to the resolution, the award of the contract to Asphalt Paving Systems is subject to the approval of the DOT and review and approval by the township attorney.

In other business, the committee members passed a resolution acknowledging the retirement of tax collector Barbara Pater, effective Nov. 30. Pater was hired in 2001 and officials thanked her for her 18 years of service to the municipality.
