MILLSTONE – Municipal officials in Millstone Township have scheduled a Township Committee meeting for Oct. 3 to provide residents with information about their plan to provide opportunities for the development of affordable housing in the community.

The committee meeting originally scheduled for Oct. 2 has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Millstone Performing Arts Center, 5 Dawson Court. Officials will present the township’s affordable housing plan, which they are obligated by state law to have.

Affordable housing is defined as housing that is sold or rented at below market rates to individuals and families whose income meets certain guidelines.

The presentation will follow a settlement agreement authorized by the governing body in August that is expected to result in the construction of affordable housing and market rate housing in the community.

According to a resolution, the settlement agreement is between Millstone Township, the Fair Share Housing Center and Showplace Farms, LLC.

Members of the governing body have said Showplace Farms is the intervenor in Millstone’s affordable housing litigation and that its owner, Howard Schoor, is seeking to have Toll Brothers develop market rate and affordable housing.

In the agreement that is under consideration, there would be one affordable housing unit constructed for every four market rate housing units that are constructed.

Residents have expressed concern that the construction of additional housing in Millstone Township may impact traffic, water, emergency services and local schools.

According to municipal officials, the settlement agreement was approved to prevent Millstone Township from losing its immunity from builders remedy lawsuits and further litigation related to the municipality’s affordable housing obligation.
