The Property Tax Benefit, which is often referred to as the “Homestead Benefit” is a chance for homeowners, many of whom are living on a fixed income, to receive some much needed tax relief.
The New Jersey Division of Taxation has announced that filing information for the 2017 Homestead Benefit has been mailed to residents who had previously applied for this program, and Monmouth County and Ocean County homeowners can expect to receive this material the week of Sept. 23, 2019.
Alternatively, residents who requested to receive information electronically can expect an email during that same time period.
Homeowners may be eligible for this benefit if they are 65 or older or disabled with an income of $150,000 or less, or an income of no more than $75,000 if they are under the age of 65. Last year, those who qualified received an average credit of $488 for their property taxes.
A full list of eligibility requirements can be found on the New Jersey Division of Taxation website. While the Homestead Benefit differs from the Senior Freeze, residents can receive both benefits should they qualify.
The online application (www.njtaxation.org/) and the automated telephone filing system (1-877-658-2972) will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week during the filing period, which ends Dec. 2, 2019.
