Sayreville boys’ soccer team trying to come together in time to make run

Sayreville War Memorial High School has four boys’ soccer starters back from 2018.

They are Sayreville’s only boys’ soccer players with any previous varsity experience– and they are playing well so far in 2019.

The Bombers just need to figure out everything else. The young club is taking its lumps early in the fall season and has compiled a 2-4 record.

But that’s fine, according to the coaching staff.

With seven new starters and 15 new varsity players in all, Sayreville coach Nick Cifelli saw these growing pains coming before the season.

The important thing, Cifelli says, is that the Bombers are at least growing with the pains.

“They work hard, so I’m confident,” said the 19th-year coach. “We are getting there and I’m confident we’ll get there.”

“Hopefully in time to make the state tournament,” Cifelli said.

Sayreville has that base of four returning starters in senior defender Dylan Clerigo, senior defender Tim Gary, senior midfielder Brandon Amador and junior midfielder Matias Rosario. In Sayreville’s two victories, they have looked like a truly elite group.

The Bombers beat Woodbridge High School, 4-1, on Sept. 5 and Somerville High School, also 4-1, on Sept. 14. Clerigo and Gary anchored strong defensive efforts. Amador played point guard as Sayreville controlled possession. And Rosario scored a goal in both games.

In those efforts, as evidenced by the three goal margins, the players around the returners stepped up, too.

Junior goalkeeper Nick Czajkowski made 11 saves against Woodbridge and 10 versus Somerville. Junior forward Ziad Elwardany registered two assists in the Woodbridge victory. Junior midfielder Jaiden Ennett and sophomore forward Kelvin Appau both scored in that same game.

Elwardany and Appau also got on the score sheet against Somerville, as did junior forward Leon Daley.

Woodbridge, now 4-2 through six games, was no slouch of a team, either.

These Bombers can be good and well rounded. They are also getting contributions from a lot of different players, as six different players have scored this year. They just need more consistent contributions from their new varsity players.

“I think we just need more time, more working together, more patience and we’ll be ok,” Cifelli said.

Those victories were impressive, but the coach actually pointed to a more recent game, a loss, as proof of progress. Sayreville fell to a strong Colonia High School team, 2-1, on the road on Sept. 17.

Sayreville carried a 1-0 lead into the second half before falling in overtime. But it played a relatively even possession game, only losing the shot count 7-4.

“That was a good indication,” Cifelli said. “Colonia is a good team.”

Cifelli’s club has a month left of regular season games to make a run at the NJSIAA playoffs. The coach is honestly not sure if things will click in time for these Bombers, but he at least knows they won’t quit.

The captains, Rosario, Amador and Clerigo, won’t let them.

“They are playing very well and doing a great job as captains,” Cifelli said. “Everyone’s working hard.”

“I’m hoping at some point it’s going to click,” he added. “After 5-10 games we might see a different team.”
