Board member placed on home confinement following release from jail

Joseph L. Tringali, 47, of Manalapan, has been released from the Monmouth County jail, Freehold Township, following his arrest on charges of aggravated sexual assault.

Tringali was arrested on Sept. 5 following an investigation conducted by the Manalapan Police Department and charged with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old male over the Labor Day weekend, Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni said.

At the time of his arrest, Tringali was placed in the county jail. He remained in custody for 11 days.

Tringali is an elected member of the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District Board of Education. His term is scheduled to end in December and he did not file a nominating petition to seek re-election on Nov. 5.

Tringali is also the vice president of and a chaplain with the Englishtown-Manalapan First Aid Squad, according to Gramiccioni.

On Sept. 16, Tringali had a detention hearing before state Superior Court Judge Paul X. Escandon, sitting in Freehold.

A spokesman for Gramiccioni said Tringali was released from custody by Escandon with the following provisions: He has been placed on home confinement, he may not have contact with the alleged victim or witnesses, and he may not volunteer with the first aid squad.

The spokesman said Tringali does not have to wear an electronic monitoring device. No future court date for the case was available.

During a meeting on Sept. 17, members of the Manalapan-Englishtown school board passed a resolution which states “it is consistent with the code of ethics for a school board member to recuse him or herself from the board to address any personal matter that could interfere with their ability to fulfill the responsibility as an elected public official.”

In the resolution, the board members asked Tringali to abstain from any and all board action until his personal issue is resolved.

Gramiccioni has said if Tringali is convicted of aggravated sexual assault, he faces a sentence of up to 20 years in state prison.
