EDISON – A 51-year-old man with previous addresses in North Plainfield and Piscataway was charged with multiple weapons possession offenses after he caught the eye of an observant police officer, according to police.

Police Officer Richard Lorfing was on patrol when he noticed the man in a blue Audi talking for an unusually long time on a cellphone at 9:40 p.m. on Sept. 26 in the parking lot of Red Roof Inn on New Durham Road, police said.

When Lorfing questioned the man, he allegedly gave the officer a couple of fake names and claimed to be from out-of-state. The man was also charged with hindering apprehension, police said.

With assistance from other township officers and drug-sniffing K-9 dogs, police seized a loaded semi-automatic .40-caliber handgun, three loaded gun magazines, several cellphones, a small amount of marijuana, drug paraphernalia including a digital scale, and $480 in cash believed to be proceeds from narcotic sales, police said.

The man is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick, police said.
