Late in the fourth quarter at Old Bridge High School on Oct. 4, Bryson Corbett stepped in front of a pass and ran the interception back 43 yards for a touchdown. The Old Bridge crowd went wild as the football players celebrated in the end zone.

Corbett’s defensive touchdown sealed the Knights’ 36-22 victory over Greater Middlesex Conference Red Division rival South Brunswick High School.

With the victory, Old Bridge stayed undefeated at 4-0. It also clinched at least a share of the GMC’s Red Division title. South Brunswick dropped to 3-2 and saw its three-game winning streak come to an end.

”It feels great,” said Old Bridge safety Sam Kamara of the Red Division title. “No one thought we’d do this.”

On Oct. 4, Old Bridge made big plays in all three phases of the game.

Its special teams unit blocked a field goal and ran the ball back into the South Brunswick red zone, setting up a touchdown.

Its defense forced four turnovers and produced Corbett’s touchdown. Defensive end Elijah Mack also recorded three sacks.

And on offense, Old Bridge running back Rhyne Smith carried the ball 20 times for 112 yards and two touchdowns of 23 and 57 yards, respectively.

These Knights are real, and well-rounded, and, just days into October, already a champion.

“We just have to keep this going,” said Old Bridge cornerback Sergino Donou.

The Knights will go for 5-0 on Oct. 11 at Monroe Township High School. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

South Brunswick is still in good shape at 3-2, and the Vikings will try to get back on track on Oct. 11 at home against Perth Amboy High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
