The East Brunswick Public Library will hold a program about the “Legend of the Jersey Devil” at 7 p.m. on Oct. 30 at the library, 2 Jean Walling Civic Center Dr., East Brunswick.

According to folklore, the Jersey Devil was the unwanted, cursed, 13th child of Mother Leeds in the Pine Barrens. The so-called “devil’s child” went on to frighten and terrorize South Jersey.

The program is led by Angus Kress Gillespie, who received his bachelor’s degree in American Studies from Yale University and his Ph.D from the University of Pennsylvania. He is also the host of the television show “Old Ways in New Jersey” on EBTV.

Throughout the library program, Gillespie will discuss the various accounts of this myth, how they were reported and how the Jersey Devil became a huge part of New Jersey’s folklore.

This program is free and open to the public, thanks to sponsorship from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities and the Friends of the East Brunswick Public Library.
