• St. Monica’s Church, Jackson, will hold a gift auction at the AMVETS Hall, 1290 Route 571, Jackson, on Oct. 25. Doors open at 5 p.m., calling begins at 7 p.m. Prizes include tickets to Billy Joel in concert, the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular, a Coach bag and more than 250 baskets and gift certificates. • The Howell Heritage and Historical Society will present Civil War speaker and re-enactor Rich Silvani at 7 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Ardena Baptist Church Hall, Adelphia Road, Howell. Silvani will provide a look back in time to “Life as a Civil War Soldier.” This program is free and all are welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be served.

• The Monmouth County Park System is hosting “Hula: Sacred Dance of Hawaii” from 6-7 p.m. on Mondays, Oct. 28 through Dec. 2, at the Dorbrook Recreation Area Activity Center, Route 537, Colts Neck. • The Jackson Library will host several business-related programs presented in partnership with SCORE of Ocean County. “Website Design Tips for Your Business,” 6:30 p.m. Oct. 23. Internet marketing specialist Maureen Rushalski reviews design techniques and tips to improve a website. “How to Launch a Successful Small Business,” 6:30 p.m. Dec. 4, presented by Glenn Harris. • The Monmouth County Park System will present Thompson Park Day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 20 at Thompson Park, Route 520, Lincroft. • The Jackson Library, 2 Jackson Drive, Jackson, is seeking yarn donations. The Knit-Chat-Chain volunteers make items with yarn to donate to individuals in need. • The Jackson Library, 2 Jackson Drive, Jackson, will host the following events during November: “Brain Joggers” at 10 a.m. Nov. 4. Exercise your mind by playing games and working puzzles. “It’s Cranberry Time!” at 7 p.m. Nov. 13. Andrew Anderson of Double Trouble State Park will discuss the history of Ocean County’s cranberry industry, specifically the production of the fruit in Jackson. “Armchair Traveling Series: Ultimate China (Globe Trekker)” at 10 a.m. Nov. 14. • Colts Neck Volunteer Fire Company No. 2 will present a live professional wrestling fundraiser featuring Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake on Oct. 26 (doors at 6:30 p.m., bell at 7:30 p.m.) at the Bucks Mill Recreation Center, Bucks Mill Road (off Route 537), Colts Neck. • A Classic Model Toy and Train Expo will be held at Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 27. • The Jackson Library, 2 Jackson Drive, Jackson, will present the following events:

“Prose & Ink Writers Group,” 6:30 p.m. Nov. 4, 11 and 18. This writers’ group will help get your manuscript in shape whether you are a beginner or a seasoned veteran. All genres are welcome. Participants should bring three to five pages of a work in progress for constructive critique. Registration is not required.

“Ed Goldberg and the Odessa Klezmer Band,” 7 p.m. Nov. 6.

“Estate Planning, Wills and Living Wills,” 2 p.m. Nov. 18. Durmeriss Cruver-Smith of the New Jersey State Bar Foundation will discuss wills, living wills and estate planning.

“Human Sex Trafficking 101: Overview and Prevention,” 6:30 p.m. Nov. 18. Dawne Lomangino-DiMauro, co-chair of the Anti-Trafficking Task Force, New Jersey, will
provide an overview of human trafficking in New Jersey, with a particular emphasis on
the commercial sexual exploitation of minors.

“Coloring for Adults,” 10 a.m. Nov. 19. Rediscover the joy of coloring. Coloring sheets and art supplies will be provided.

“Holiday Trimming Centerpieces,” 2 p.m. Dec. 9. Tracy from Whiting Flower Shoppe will help attendees create their own holiday flower arrangement.

• The League of Women Voters of Monmouth County will present a candidates forum featuring candidates for Monmouth County freeholder and sheriff at 6:45 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters, 125 Symmes Drive, Manalapan. • The Deep Cut Orchid Society will hold its annual orchid show and sale from Feb. 6-9 in Dearborn Market’s 11,000-square-foot greenhouse, 2170 Route 35 South, Holmdel. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Visitors will view an array of orchids vying for American Orchid Society ribbons and trophies. There will be free guided tours, and educational and orchid-themed workshops for enthusiasts of all levels. Orchid experts will be on hand to answer questions. • The New Jersey State Museum, Trenton, will present “Preserving the Pinelands: Albert Horner’s Portraits of a National Treasure,” opening Oct. 12. The exhibition features images by photographer Albert Horner which capture the quiet beauty and intimate landscapes of New Jersey’s Pinelands National Reserve. A number of artifacts and scientific specimens from the museum’s collections help tell some of the stories of the land, animals, people and industries that make this unique area a state and national treasure. “Preserving the Pinelands” will be on view through June 28, 2020. • The Jackson Library will host “Friends Fun Fair” from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 22. Celebrate National Friends of the Library Month with fun, games, raffles, crafts for children and adults, refreshments and more. Face painting from 10 a.m. to noon. • Jackson Rotary Club will sponsor a bus trip to the Tropicana Casino, Atlantic City, on Dec. 2 for the Christmas show. Cost of the trip is $65 and includes bus transportation, show ticket, buffet, $15 in slot play and gratuity for the bus driver. The bus will leave Jackson at 10:30 a.m. and return at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds from the trip will go to Rotary Club charities. Space is limited. • The Lakewood Historical Society and the Lakewood Heritage Commission are inviting the public to “An Afternoon with Boxing Icon Joe Louis” presented by boxing historian Eamo Clyne from Dublin, Ireland, at the Lakewood Historical Museum, Pine Park, at 2 p.m. Oct. 27. During World War II, Joe Louis lived and trained in Lakewood. He competed from 1934-51 and was the world heavyweight champion from 1937-49. Tickets are $5 and include light refreshments. • New Jersey State Museum, 205 W. State St., Trenton, is presenting “Many Inspired Steps” to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Currently on view through Nov. 10, the exhibition uses a variety of objects and images to examine the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union, the pioneers of space travel and other state connections to the landing and the space program. • “New Jersey Baseball: From the Cradle to the Major Leagues” is on exhibit at the Morven Museum and Garden, Princeton, until Oct. 27. The exhibition tells the story of New Jersey’s role in the history of early organized baseball through artifacts, text, images and other visuals.
