Edison police make swift arrest after report of break-in

EDISON – A 27-year-old New Brunswick man was charged with burglary and theft of property after allegedly breaking into a Celler Road home, according to police.

The homeowner told police she found the man in the house after she returned home from work at 2:15 p.m. Oct. 10, police said.

Police officers Nicole Errico and Lisa Cimmino were dispatched to the residence. The homeowner told police that when she confronted the man, he allegedly told her he thought he had entered a friend’s home, but apparently got the wrong address.

The man then hurried outside and peddled off toward Highland Park on a mountain bike, which the homeowner told police she found in her driveway. After the man left, the homeowner realized her bedroom had been ransacked, police said.

While Errico took the resident’s statement and gathered evidence from the scene, including security video from nearby homes, Cimmino canvassed the area and, based on the homeowner’s description, stopped the suspect near a supermarket on Raritan Avenue in Highland Park.

The suspect was found to be in possession of gold jewelry allegedly taken from the Celler Road home at the time he was taken into custody. He is currently being held at the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center, North Brunswick, police said.
