Old Bridge High School's Andrew Vera (9) receives the opening kick off to start the Thanksgiving Day, 25th annual Battle of Route 18 football game against East Brunswick High School on Nov 22. The Old Bridge Knights defeated the East Brunswick Bears in the home game, 10-0.

Sayreville War Memorial High School nearly handed rival Old Bridge High School its first loss of the football season on Oct. 18.

But in the end, the Knights stayed undefeated at home with a 25-yard field goal from Andrew Vera in the final seconds.

Old Bridge beat Sayreville, 25-23, improving to 6-0 in 2019. Sayreville fell to 2-4 after winning two straight games the past two weeks.

Old Bridge quarterback Owen Haughney tossed three touchdown passes on the night. His first two scores went 45 yards to Eddie Nugent and 68 yards to Sergino Donou, staking the Knights to a 14-0 lead by the third quarter.

But then Sayreville scored 16 straight points to take a 16-14 lead. Jayvis Rayside returned a kickoff for a touchdown, the defense recorded a safety and quarterback Mark Whitford ran for a one-yard score.

After that, Haughney’s third touchdown of the night, a one-yard pass to Bryson Corbett, gave Old Bridge the lead back. Then Sayreville answered again with a one-yard touchdown run by Rayside, leaving the Bombers with a 23-22 lead.

Finally, though, Old Bridge drove 60 yards and took almost seven minutes off the clock, setting up Vera’s game-winning field goal.

The Knights will try to stay undefeated on Oct. 25 at Franklin High School. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Sayreville will try to improve to 3-4 on Oct. 25 at South Brunswick High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
