METUCHEN – For a smooth transition, and to continue century-long traditions of the annual Memorial Day Parade and Winter Festival Parade, borough officials have created a Metuchen Parade Commission to oversee the parades from next year onward.

The Borough Council voted in favor of an ordinance creating the commission at a meeting on Oct. 29.

“The proposed ordinance is because the [Metuchen] Chamber of Commerce will no longer be putting on the two parades,” Mayor Jonathan Busch said. “And with the means of continuing this tradition, almost century-long tradition in Metuchen, we decided to establish as a borough a parade commission to continue that legacy.”

The commission will be made up of five members including residents of or owners/operators of businesses in Metuchen. At least one member of the commission is a veteran or is currently a member of one of the branches of the United States Armed Forces.

The terms of members will be three years on a staggering basis. The mayor will nominate the members with the advice and consent of the borough council.

The members of the parade commission will have exclusive control over the planning, organization, promotion and implementation of the two annual parades, according to the ordinance.
