MONROE – Democratic incumbents held onto the council-at-large seats in Monroe during the November election.
Councilman Stephen Dalina, who will serve his third term, earned the most votes with 6,962/26% and Councilwoman Miriam S. Cohen, who will serve her second term, registered 6,937 votes/26%.
Republican challengers seeking their first terms included former Councilman David Rothman, who received 6,647 votes/25%, and newcomer Peter F. LoPresti, who collected 6,514 votes/24%.
Dalina, who has lived in Monroe for more than two decades, said during the campaign he wants to continue to help Monroe control spending. He said under Mayor Gerald Tamburro’s leadership, Monroe has had zero tax increases for three of the past four years, the town has a AA+ plus bond rating, and they have a transparent, open and accountable budgeting process.
He said he will focus his efforts on ensuring Monroe remains a place that is affordable for our residents with good services.
Cohen, who has lived in Monroe for more than a decade, said she will focus on government efficiency – “keeping taxes as low as possible and maintain the strong fiscal management that has ensured Monroe has the second lowest tax rate of the 25 towns in Middlesex County.”
She said she will focus to continue to find savings, while ensuring a responsive government for all.
Election results are according to the Middlesex County Board of Elections and are unofficial until certified.
