The Bordentown Regional High School boys’ soccer team’s successful season was cut short with a defeat in the state tournament, but there are still plenty of positive takeaways from the year.
After Bordentown shared the Burlington County Scholastic League Patriot Division championship title with Cinnaminson High School–both squads finished with a 7-1 division record—-the two teams met again on Nov. 1 in the NJSIAA South Jersey, Group 2 tournament quarterfinals.
Fourth-seeded Cinnaminson got the slight upper hand when it defeated its league rival, fifth-seeded Bordentown, 3-1, at Cinnaminson.
Bordentown, which finished the regular season with a 12-8-1 record, opened the state tournament with a 1-0 victory over 12th-seeded Delsea Regional High School on Oct. 29 in Bordentown.
The Scotties defeated Delsea on the strength of a goal scored from freshman Jay Beyers. Midfielder Cameron Schroeder earned an assist on the goal.
Repeating another successful season may be on the horizon for Bordentown.
Coach Jason Zablow has key players on this squad who expect to return and be forces during the 2020 season.
Junior defender and a staple in the backfield, Aiden Amankwah, not only anchored the Bordentown defense this year, he also connected on four goals during the regular season. He will undoubtedly be a key adversary for Burlington County teams next season.
Junior goalkeeper Charlie Revy could also be a pivotal return for Bordentown next season. Revy recorded more than 100 saves this season in 17 appearances, while also put up a winning record of 10-6-1 on the season.
Junior attacking midfielder Shane Ritter could also prove to be a returning standout next season. He led the team in scoring this year with 14 goals and nine assists.
While Zablow does have quality talent potentially set to come back next year, Bordentown will also lose key senior players such as midfielder Schroeder. The Bordentown midfielder helped pace the offense this year for the Scotties when he collected nine goals and seven assists.
