The preliminary investigation determined the driver of a 2006 Hyundai SUV traveling south in the left lane on Route 18 struck a work zone traffic safety vehicle and entered the right lane. The SUV was then struck by a 2014 BMW traveling south in the right lane, police said.

The driver of the BMW, a 71-year-old male from Belle Mead, was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for life-threatening injuries, police said.

The investigation is active and is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Patrolman Henry Penley of the Old Bridge Police Department at 732-721-5600 or Detective Jonathan Berman of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-745-4328.
