The house at 47 Spring St. was originally purchased in 1956 by the Nelson Family, and in 1960 they built a 1.5-story steel frame structure with concrete block infill and footprint of approximately 3,500 sq. ft. on the side yard of the house. Nelson Glass Company then moved from its original home at 248 Nassau St. into the new building at 45 Spring St.
The style of the existing structure is Modern Industrial, and Nelson has collaborated with JZA+D to preserve the integrity of the building’s original design within the neighbourhood context, and to honor the legacy of her father, Bob. She notes that the building’s placement in the town is a natural transition between the business and residential districts, with the addition of apartments to the commercial space providing a “fitting evolution of the property” within the neighborhood.
According to Joshua Zinder, AIA, managing partner of JZA+D, the terraced style of Nelson Glass House addition comprises three residential units on the second floor: two 2-bedroom units, one of which is categorized as “affordable,” and one 1-bedroom unit. The third floor will offer one 2-bedroom and one 3-bedroom unit, while the fourth-floor penthouse offers another 3-bedroom option.
Along with the convenience of an elevator and on-site parking off Lincoln Ct. in the rear, each rental features an outdoor terraced balcony with glass railings in recognition of the history of the site as previously occupied by a storied, 70-year-old glass company.
Designed to LEED Silver standards and featuring a green roof with succulent plantings, Nelson Glass House is one of the most anticipated developments in downtown Princeton.
