Cranbury’s Board of Education to fill open seat

Cranbury’s Board of Education will be seeking a replacement for board member Evelyn Spann once her resignation is in effect on Dec. 31.

Spann’s open seat on the board and resignation is due to her victory in the general election this past November for the township committee.

“Evelyn Spann was elected to the township committee on Nov. 5, resulting in her resignation to the Board of Education effective Dec. 31. By statue, the board has 65 days from the date of the vacancy to fill the seat,” said Karen Callahan, Cranbury Board of Education President. “The vacancy posting will also be up on the school website.”

Callahan said the board will have interviews on Jan. 28.

“The board will hold interviews at the Jan. 28 board meeting and can appoint that night if we are in agreement. The successfully appointed candidate will serve until Dec. 31, 2020,” Callahan said. “Their seat will be on the ballot at the November 2020 election.”

Spann has served four terms on the board totaling 11 years.

“I took a fourth term on the school board specifically to work on the later school start time and get the send/receive signed in Princeton. Those were two projects that had been started in Princeton, but had not been finished,” Spann said. “I came in to support this district and stuck around to finish some unfinished business and we did that.”

She said that she not only feels that she achieved what she set out do in her fourth term, but is also honored and privileged to have worked with the school board.

“They are an amazing group of people and work with such integrity. It makes it an easy job to have,” Spann said.

She said she is confident that a good candidate will be selected to fill her seat.

“I have the confidence in Cranbury to find a suitable replacement for me. There are wonderful people in this town, who are well-educated and interested in education,” Spann said. “I am very confident that someone in the community will step up and be the right fit. I have confidence in the board that they will pick that person.”
