East Brunswick Library’s Maker Club provides creative activities for kids

EAST BRUNSWICK–From creating paracord bracelets to Shrinky Dink projects, the East Brunswick Public Library’s Maker Club will provide a weekly space for children’s creative endeavors.

Youth Services Librarian Dana Vocht said the Maker Club is an afterschool ‘tween program for students in the third grade and up to learn how to make something different every week that they can take home with them.

Vocht said the club started in December and is offered every week unless otherwise noted.

“Maker Club was created because now that schools have shifted to offer more STEM-centered programs during and after school, I wanted to give the kids the opportunity to make something from scratch with their own hands and skills,” Vocht said. “Most Maker Clubs will feature some type of craft or experiment that can be used to create something unique that allows the students to explore their creative side and bring something home that they can be proud of.”

The Maker Club meets every Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in the library’s EB Create Makerspace, located at 2 Jean Walling Civic Center Dr., unless otherwise noted.

Vocht said the club usually gets around 10 students per class.

“Students who are not yet in Maker Club should consider stopping by so they can have a space outside of school or home where they can socialize and be creative,” Vocht said. “The program has a different activity every week that every student can enjoy. For that hour they can forget about any outside stress and have fun and learn some new skills.”

Vocht said no sign up or commitment are required; however, programs are as supplies last, so the library recommends showing up early to ensure space is available.

“Students can check out our monthly calendar for a more detailed description about which activity we are going to do each week,” Vocht said.
