The stage was set for a great Greater Middlesex Conference White Division showdown between the North Brunswick Township High School and the Edison High School girls’ basketball teams on Jan. 9 in North Brunswick.

The Raiders came in on a three-game winning streak, while Edison was white hot, storming in off four straight victories.

Edison looked to be on the verge of winning its fifth straight contest with a five-point lead entering the fourth quarter, but North Brunswick rallied with a 15-2 burst to finish the game and top the Eagles, 41-33, to improve to 6-2 on the season.

“I can’t give enough credit to our players. They really bounced back in the fourth quarter,” said the North Brunswick coach Mark Zielinski. “We buckled down on the defensive end and understood what things they hurt us with earlier in the game. It was a complete team effort. I couldn’t be happier with our group right now.”

Freshmen Niyell McCargo and Anne Marie Quagliata played stellar basketball in the second half for the Raiders.

McCargo scored all of her team-high 12 points in the second half, scoring seven of those points in the third quarter.

The freshman went three-of-four from the free-throw line down the stretch to help the Raiders seal their fourth straight victory.

Quagliata fueled North Brunswick’s rally in the fourth quarter, scoring seven of her nine points in the quarter.

Sophomore Megan Farrell scored all seven of her points in the second half as well for the Raiders.

Edison’s freshman forward Tianna Whitney led all scorers with 13 points in the contest.

Shania Wolfe-White and Latayjah Jenkins each scored eight points for Edison, which fell to 4-4 on the season.
