The open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony were held on Jan. 9 at the new dialysis center, located at 1020 Route 18.

Clinical Manager Monique Carty-Ortega said the company has more than 100 locations throughout New Jersey. A division of Fresenius Medical Care North America, Fresenius Kidney Care serves more than 190,000 patients in more than 2,400 facilities nationwide, according to information provided by the company.

“In the area, there is a growing need there are a lot of patients with kidney disease caused by hypertension and diabetes, so one in every seven Americans suffers from kidney disease,” Carty-Ortega said. “So we found that in this area in East Brunswick there was not another center and after talking with the other hospitals and seeing how the hospitals’ patients are being discharged and traveling long ways, we decided to open up a center here.”

Carty-Ortega said the new center is in an historical area because it is located where the old movie theater use to be.

“Patients are welcome to walk-in, we are always able to give them information and give them literature about [the center],” Carty-Ortega said. “We will set up an appropriate time to give a walk-through because obviously we don’t want people walking through while there are patients being treated due to HIPAA [Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act] privacy. [Patients] can visit our website and call our phone number or they can walk in and we will provide information.”

Township Council Vice President Sharon Sullivan was present during the ribbon-cutting ceremony to welcome the staff at the new center.

“Welcome to East Brunswick, it is so wonderful for you to come to the Central Jersey business community,” Sullivan said. “As you can tell, you go up and down Route 18, parts of Route 18 are so vibrant and we want to welcome you to the business community and on behalf of the [township] council and the mayor, it will be a pleasure doing business with you.”
