The freight train that has been the Saint John Vianney High School girls’ basketball team continued to be unstoppable on the court.
That was evident when Saint John Vianney played against Albertus Magnus High School of New York on Jan. 26 at Holmdel High School in the Coaches Choice USA Select sponsored Shore Conference Showcase Challenge tournament.
Central Jersey’s No. 1 ranked high school girls’ basketball team knocked in a total of 12 three-pointers and scored a season-high 92 points to defeat Albertus Mangus, 92-52, to improve to a perfect mark of 14-0 on the season.
“The kids were excited to come play on a big stage in front of a packed house and college coaches,” said Saint John Vianney coach Dawn Karpell. “They came out laser focused. It was good for us to get in rhythm with shooting three-pointers. It’s good to be in the middle of the season and be shooting the ball well.”
Sophomore Madison St. Rose continued to be the catalyst of the Lancers’ offense. She connected on 18 of her game-high 26 points in the first half, including pulling up from behind the arc to knock down a three-pointer before the halftime buzzer to give Saint John Vianney a 46-25 lead at the half against the school from Bardonia, N.Y.
St. Rose is averaging just under 17 points a game this season for the Lancers.
Junior Christina Whitehead recorded three of her four three-pointers in the second quarter for the Lancers and finished with 17 points in the victory.
Fellow classmate Katie Hill knocked in three shots from downtown and scored 14 points in the St. John Vianney victory, while teammate Megan Cahalan racked up 12 points in the contest.
It’s the first time this season that Saint John Vianney scored over 85 points in a game.
The Lancers will look to keep perfect on the season when they play at Matawan Regional High School on Jan. 28.
