An alliance which would offer no tolerance for “socially inappropriate” acts of hate could be formed among mayors in Monmouth County.

During a Red Bank Borough Council meeting on Jan. 23, Mayor Pasquale Menna said mayors in Monmouth County would be invited to form an alliance against bigotry, hate and prejudice.

“I think we are all in general agreement that we should be against all aspects of (hate) and so I think that politically we have to give this more support than just saying it’s awful. Collectively, we have to join together,” he said.

Menna, who called acts of hate “socially inappropriate,” said the goal of an alliance would be to bring these issues “to the forefront of the public arena and make people understand (hate and prejudice) is not cool.”

In other business at the council meeting, Councilwoman Kate Triggiano announced that Red Bank’s ban on the use of certain plastic items will take effect in September.

In August 2019, council members adopted an ordinance that prohibits the use and distribution of single-use plastic bags, polystyrene foam containers, and straws by business operators in town.

The ordinance included a one-year grace period so business operators would be able to use the soon-to-be-banned plastic items they already had in inventory.
