The Saint Thomas Aquinas High School girls’ basketball team continued to chalk up victories in Greater Middlesex Conference play on Jan. 30 in Sayreville.
Saint Thomas Aquinas improved to 16-3 when the Edison school scored a a 66-47 victory over Sayreville War Memorial High School.
“We played really well and played a lot of team basketball,” said Saint Thomas Aquinas coach Brittney Griffin. “(Sayreville) threw a box and one at us and our girls were able to work with it. We had different girls step up to the plate and be successful.”
Senior Akiyah Baker led the way in the victory for the Trojans when she connected for 10 of her team-high 18 points in the first half.
Baker anchored Saint Thomas Aquinas’ 14-2 surge to begin the second quarter, which featured the senior converting a three-point play with 4:42 to go in the half to put the Trojans up, 23-10.
The 18 points ties a season-high mark for Baker that was set during the team’s earlier victory against Sayreville on Jan. 7.
Senior Emma Boslet played an all-around stellar game for the Trojans, finishing with 17 points in the victory. Teammate Jessica Cooper recorded 13 points to give Saint Thomas Aquinas three players in double figures on the night.
The Trojans are 4-1 in their last five games.
For Sayreville, junior Stephanie Van Note collected a team-high 18 points in the contest, while teammate Brooke Holland sank three three-pointers and finished with 17 points in the loss.
The loss snapped Sayreville’s four-game winning streak and dropped the Bombers to 11-7 on the season.
