East Brunswick Boy Scout Troop 223 held an Eagle Scout Court of Honor to honor Luke Gavin for his contributions to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in South River.
Jersey Blue Chapter Regent Susan Luczu, of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), presented a Youth Citizenship Certificate Award and pin to Luke, during a ceremony at the St. Thomas Church Parish Hall in Old Bridge on Jan. 26.
Luke graduated from East Brunswick High School in 2019 and is continuing his education at Rowan University as an engineering major.
Luke completed his service project at Holy Trinity as the project manager for the planning, landscaping and restoration of an existing prayer labyrinth on the church grounds, according to information provided by NSDAR.
Luke was also presented with the NSDAR Challenge Coin. The challenge coin tradition was introduced as early as the Roman Empire, who rewarded soldiers by presenting them with coins to recognize their achievements. More currently, during World War I and World War II, challenge coins were used by American volunteers and military pilots to confirm their identity when downed in enemy territory, or behind Allied lines without proper identification, according to the statement. Luke was presented these awards by DAR to always remind him of his extraordinary accomplishment and the high ideals that Scouting represent.
