McCarter Theatre presents ‘Pan’ with flutist Claire Chase

The McCarter Theatre in Princeton is presenting a community participation performance with flutist and MacArthur fellow Claire Chase in “Pan.”

“Pan”, which is an evening-length performance for solo flute, live electronics and an ensemble made up of community members, is set to take place on Friday, Feb. 14.

According to McCarter Theatre officials, they have announced a casting call for music and theater lovers who want to participate.

No experience is necessary. All ages (10 and older) and abilities are welcomed to participate in the performance. Instruments and training will be provided.

Officials said all that is required are open ears, a desire to have a musical and theatrical adventure with new friends, and attendance at rehearsals and the performance.

Created, conceived and performed collaboratively by composer Marcos Balter, flutist Chase, director Douglas Fitch, and creative producer Jane M. Saks and Project&, “Pan” is a participatory performance ritual in which the community’s involvement in the artistic process plays a crucial role in the work’s incarnation, development, production, and dissemination.

Based on the story of the Greek mythological god of flute-playing fame (and infamy), “Pan” amounts to the creation not just of a work of art, but of a community. “Pan” attempts to actually demonstrate, rather than to speculate about, how music-making creates spaces for societies to come together in times of uncertainty.

“Pan” premiered at The Kitchen in New York City in March 2018 in collaboration with the Riseboro Youth and Senior Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The work received its Chicago premiere at the Garfield Park Conservatory in October 2018 in collaboration with youth from the People’s Music School of Chicago and the West Chicago Community Music School.

According to officials, rehearsal 1 – Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 6–8 p.m., rehearsal 2 – Thursday, Feb. 13, 6–8 p.m., dress rehearsal – Friday, Feb. 14, 5–6:30 p.m., and the show is Feb. 14 at 8 p.m.

Tickets for Claire Chase start at $25 and are on sale now. They can be purchased online at www.mccarter.org, by phone at 609-258-2787, or in person at the McCarter Ticket Office.
