MILLTOWN – The construction of a new large motor/sensory playground at the Parkview School is expected to start this summer.
Diane Senerchia, director of Northfield Bank Foundation, presented a $10,000 grant to Parkview School administrators on Feb. 4. Carl Schneider, president of the Milltown School District Board of Education; Eric Siegel, principal of Parkview School; Kelly Sirna, Milltown Education Foundation (MEF) trustee; Kate Scotto, MEF treasurer; and pre-kindergarten teachers, kindergarten teachers and pupils were on hand to accept the grant.
In addition to the $10,000 grant, the MEF will contribute $15,000 from its own funds.
“We are awaiting the outcome of a Team Depot grant through The Home Depot for an additional $12,000 worth of materials and installation of the fence and mulch for the playground,” MEF President Laura Carasso said. “The district will make up the balance of the cost, which is estimated to be approximately $10,000.”
The funding for the new playground will be one of the largest funding projects for the MEF in the last few years. For the last two years, MEF allocated $18,000 toward implementing flexible seating in every classroom at the Joyce Kilmer – grades 4-8 – and Parkview schools – grades pre-K to third grade. Since then, the flexible seating has been phased into the classrooms.
MEF, according to its website, is an independent, nonprofit organization providing financial assistance and stimulating educational opportunities that are otherwise not available through the Milltown School District’s operating budget.
Carasso said MEF is made up of seven trustees and a few volunteers.
