MONROE – A major road improvement project on Route 33 is completed and fully operational.

“We have heard and responded to residents about the need for left-turn arrows on Route 33 and Applegarth Road and Butcher Road,” Mayor Gerald Tamburro said in a prepared statement. “Because Route 33 is a state highway, we went to our state legislators and asked them to intervene and fast track the project with the state Department of Transportation.”

Tamburro expressed appreciation to Assemblyman Dan Benson (D-Mercer, Middlesex), chairman of the Assembly Transportation Committee, and his colleagues representing the 14th Legislative District: Sen. Linda Greenstein (D-Mercer, Middlesex) and Assemblyman Wayne DeAngelo (D-Mercer, Middlesex), who helped move this major intersection improvement project to completion.

“Working with our state and county leaders who serve Monroe, I am extremely pleased to report that work is finished on a much-needed dedicated left-turn arrow on both sides of Route 33,” Tamburro said in the statement. “This project is very important to our residents and I can’t thank our legislators enough for getting this project to the top of the pile at the state transportation department.”

“Improvements to this intersection were very much needed and I am pleased that this project has been completed expeditiously,” Benson said in the statement. “Local motorists and area residents should now experience safer and easier travel through the area.”

The project began in late September, following an agreement between the State of New Jersey, Middlesex County and Monroe Township.

Last year, at the urging of Tamburro, the state added a left turn signal at Route 33 and Perrinneville Road as part of the completed project.
