Central Jersey Top 10: Boys’ basketball rankings

The biggest upset of the tournament season in scholastic boys’ basketball came on Feb. 20 when Mater Dei Prep eliminated Middletown High School South in the first round of the Shore Conference Tournament.

The upset ended Middletown South’s 18-game winning streak and knocked the Eagles out of the top spot in the rankings for the first time this season.

Here’s a look at the latest Central Jersey Top-10 boys’ basketball rankings.

1. Saint Thomas Aquinas, 20-4: The school from Edison made the leap to No. 1 in the rankings, rolling to a 77-43 victory over South Plainfield in the first round of the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament on Feb. 20. Quadry Adams connected on a game-high 25 points in the victory.

2. Middletown South, 22-2: Middletown South saw its 18-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of Mater Dei Prep on Feb. 20, losing to the Seraphs, 57-55, in the opening round of the Shore Conference Tournament. That was only the third time all season that the Eagles scored less than 60 points in the a game.

3. Holmdel, 19-3: Holmdel squeaked out a 69-62 victory over Ocean Township on Feb. 20 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Shore Conference Tournament. The Hornets are on a seven-game winning streak.

4. Marlboro, 19-5: The Mustangs held off rival Manalapan for a 76-73 victory in the first round of the Shore Conference Tournament on Feb. 20 for its fourth straight victory. Alex Ratner recorded a team-high 26 points in the victory.

5. South Brunswick, 19-4: South Brunswick is on a seven-game winning streak, cruising past Piscataway in the first round of the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament to a 86-66 victory on Feb. 20. Ty Murchison sank a game-high 23 points in the victory.

6. Saint Joseph, 17-6: The Metuchen school pulled out a 65-62 overtime victory over Wardlaw-Hartridge on Feb. 20 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament. The Falcons are 7-1 in their last eight games.

7. Edison, 17-5: Edison continued its hot streak, soaring past East Brunswick to a 72-48 victory on Feb. 20 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Greater Middlesex Conference for the first time in two years. Malachi White delivered a game-high 21 points in the victory.

8. Allentown, 18-5: Allentown surged to a 78-61 victory over The Pennington School on Feb. 19 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Mercer County Tournament. The Redbirds are 12-1 in their last 13 games.

9. Hightstown, 18-5: The Rams are on an eight-game winning streak and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Mercer County Tournament with a 71-56 victory over Ewing on Feb. 19. Nicky Desmond dropped in a team-high 14 points in the victory.

10. Red Bank Catholic, 16-8: The Caseys jumped back into the rankings due to their three-game winning streak. Red Bank Catholic advanced back to the quarterfinals of the Shore Conference Tournament on Feb. 20 with a 61-51 victory over Lakewood.
