Two males reportedly knocked on the door, advising the homeowner they were from the water company and were there to check a leak.

Once inside the home, the suspects allegedly advised the homeowner to go downstairs and bang on the pipes; the homeowner came back upstairs to find his home ransacked, according to police.

Anyone experiencing a similar situation should call the Detective Bureau at 732-247-0922, ext. 331.

To verify the legitimacy of utility workers, call 732-545-3200 at any time during the day or night.

Police reported in their statement that In-Line Services is currently doing water meter replacements throughout the township, and that the employees will respond to residences by appointment only and have proper credentials.
