Improvements planned for county road near Hillsborough in March

Somerset County officials released a recent statement that reconstruction plans are in place to begin in March on Amwell Road.

County officials said in a Feb. 27 statement that improvements for Amwell Road (County Route 514) from Elizabeth Avenue westward to Wortman Street, are planned to begin in March.

Utility relocations in support of the project also will begin this month, and an official start date will be provided when the date is more certain, according to officials. Officials said construction will continue through the end of the year.

“The goal of the work is to make Amwell Road safer for all users,” Somerset County officials said in a released statement. “This project consists of the reconstruction of approximately 1.25 miles of roadway and will include new storm sewers, pavement widening and resurfacing, and upgrades to the two traffic signals located at Elizabeth Avenue and Mettlers Road. Although no new lanes will be added, wider roadway shoulders will be striped for bicycle lanes.”

Officials explained that the majority of the work on Amwell Road will occur during the daytime, and one-lane closures will be necessary during daytime construction hours; flaggers and a temporary traffic signal will be utilized to alternate traffic.

“Motorists should expect delays when construction starts and plan accordingly,” officials added.

Although officials said one lane is planned to be closed during the day, the roadway is anticipated to be fully opened to two-way traffic each night. Officials said that for short periods, the roadway is also required to be fully closed at night to allow for work that could not be performed otherwise.

“Car and truck detours will be posted; motorists will need to follow posted detour signs during these periods,” officials said.

A Public Information Center (PIC) was held for the project on March 28, 2019, according to officials. Officials said that a “vast majority of funding” for this project was provided through the New Jersey Department of Transportation (DOT) State Aid program.

“Somerset County will provide updates during construction to provide advance notice for staged traffic shifts and nighttime detour schedules,” officials said.
