SOUTH RIVER – Law enforcement personnel successfully resolved a potentially dangerous situation by taking a 22-year-old male resident of South River into custody after he had barricaded himself in a borough home, Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Christopher Kuberiet and Police Chief Mark Tinitigan reported.
At 9 a.m. on March 4, officers from the South River Police Department attempted to make contact with a suspect who was wanted in connection with a burglary and theft that occurred at a local convenience store earlier that day in the borough, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.
When officers arrived at the man’s residence, they were denied entry. The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office declined to say where in South River the man lives.
Personnel from the prosecutor’s Special Operations Response Team (SORT) were dispatched to the residence after they were alerted a wanted man had barricaded himself in his home, according to the prosecutor’s office.
The incident ended at about 1 p.m. when officers from SORT entered the residence and apprehended the man without incident, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Public Information Officer Andrea Boulton said the man was charged with burglary, criminal mischief and theft. He was being held in custody until his initial court appearance on March 5.
Boulton said the prosecutor’s office would not be providing any additional information about the incident at this time.
Kuberiet thanked the professional response from SORT and the South River police for defusing what he called a potentially dangerous situation.
