SOUTH RIVER–In the midst of the ongoing coronavirus crisis, the South River Public Schools District gave out non-perishable food items to students who receive free/reduced lunch.

“We realize that many of our families count on the breakfast and lunch their children depend on at school,” Superintendent Sylvia Zircher said. “We want to make sure that these children continue to have access to good food while our schools are closed. Good nutrition is key to maintaining good health, and we want to give our students the best opportunity to remain healthy.”

Families whose children receive free or reduced lunch were able to pick up non-perishable food items on March 18 at the Middle School Cafetorium on Montgomery Street.

During different food pickup times, no more than 25 people were allowed in the cafeteria at once and custodians were present to disinfect in between pickup times, according to a prepared statement from Zircher.

Zircher said almost 50% of the schools district students qualify to receive free or reduced lunch.

“We are currently exploring the opportunity to continue to provide another food distribution, but are conscientious about maintaining the wellbeing of the staff who works so hard to put these meals together and organize the distribution process,” Zircher said. “We are going to continue to update the public of additional distribution dates if this is possible.”
