SOUTH RIVER–Management at the South River Wawa gas station/store at 656 Old Bridge Turnpike in South River were notified on April 3 that a store employee had tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19).

The store was immediately closed so the premises could be thoroughly cleaned, sanitized, and disinfected by a professional company. In addition, all opened or exposed food was discarded, according to a statement from the South River Police Department.

Wawa management has worked with the Department of Health to determine which other employees were in contact with the infected employee. Those employees are now quarantining for 14 days. With approval from the Board of Health, the store has been allowed to reopen with staffing from nearby Wawa locations, according to the statement.

Since the employee is not a South River resident, neither the South River Police Department nor the Borough of South River was initially notified of the positive test result, according to the statement.

In order to clear up some misconceptions, the police department made clear to residents that neither the South River Police Department nor the Borough of South River receives information that identifies the place of employment, previous whereabouts, or previous movements of individuals who test positive for COVID-19, according to the statement.

Notifications to any workplaces, businesses, or individuals who infected persons may have had contact with are done by the Department of Health.

The police department thanked the management of South River Wawa for working together with the department to bring information to residents, according to the statement.
