WOODBRIDGE – As residents begin to observe the many holidays in April – Passover, Ramadan, Baisakhi and Easter Sunday – Mayor John McCormac urges residents to keep practicing social distancing to help slow the spread of the coronavirus.
“Governor [Phil] Murphy’s Executive Order No. 107 specifically bans social gatherings of any size and directs residents to stay at home,” he said in his daily report on April 7. “While this is disappointing to those who wish to celebrate these events with family and friends, such ceremonies will not be allowed until the ban is lifted.”
The mayor noted many services are streamed live or televised that are available where residents can safely celebrate.
Similar to the list of open pharmacies, food stores and takeout restaurants, township officials are preparing a list of any remote religious services available from the township’s more than 50 houses of worship in Woodbridge. Once the list is compiled, it will be published on the township’s website.
“However you pray, whenever you pray, and whoever you pray to, please include an extra prayer that this lousy virus gets defeated,” McCormac said.
Woodbridge officials reported 38 new positive COVID-19 cases, the township’s lowest reported number of cases within the last 24 hours, which brings total COVID-19 cases to 419.
“We do not quite know how to interpret this number, but it is less than half of yesterday’s total [80] and that is great news,” he said. “We will probably need to get through the week before coming to any real conclusions.”
McCormac added “still, that is 38 more of our residents who are sick so please keep them and all of the victims to date in your thoughts and prayers.”
The mayor added April 7 marks World Health Day.
“Please remember and pray for those doctors, nurses and other health professionals who are on the front lines in dealing with COVID-19,” he said. “They are working long hours often with limited resources dealing with those infected and, like our military, they put themselves in harm’s way to protect us and keep us safe.”
