SOUTH RIVER–Stepping to help residents in need during the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis, the South River Food Bank is asking for essential items to be donated.

Supervisor Elizabeth Lukacs said the food bank is open to South River residents who are experiencing a need for assistance.

Regular distribution is from 10 a.m. to noon each Wednesday and the first two Saturdays of the month.

Lukacs said an ID and current proof of South River residence are required.

In accordance with the current social distancing guidelines, bags are pre-packed by the food bank volunteers and distributed outside of the food bank.

“While our regular distribution is limited to one visit per month per household, we are fortunate to be receiving a variety of perishable items from MCFOODS (Middlesex County Food Organization and Outreach Distribution Services) three to four days a week which allows us to offer our clients the opportunity to pick up these additional items,” Lukacs said.

The most needed items are canned soups and stews, canned meats, canned tuna, canned fruit, peanut butter, shelf-stable milk, pasta, rice side mixes, canned pork and beans, and canned vegetables.

“To make it easier for those who wish to donate non-perishable food items or personal products, we have added hours specifically for drive up and drop off of donations outside the food bank,” Lukacs said.

The food bank is located at 98 Jackson St. The food bank is open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30-11 a.m. and 5-6 p.m. The food bank is also open on Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to noon and on Saturdays from 1-3 p.m.

If residents prefer to make monetary donations, Lukacs said checks may be made out to The South River Food Bank and mailed to the borough offices at 48 Washington St., South River.
