Raritan Valley YMCA offers home activities to celebrate Earth Day

EAST BRUNSWICK – Earth Day and Arbor Day celebrations take a new twist this year with an at home version.

Instead of cleaning up litter and other debris throughout the county’s greenway, parks, brooks and public areas, residents are asked as individuals or families to contribute to a cleaner community and climate at home.

Perform an environmentally-friendly action between Earth Day, April 22, and Arbor Day, April 25, and snap a photo to post on the Y’s social media sites, hashtag #ymcagoesgreen and #doingourpart and share at Facebook.com/raritanvalleyymca

Consider planting a tree, starting a vegetable garden, creating a compost pile, making a butterfly feeder, cleaning up the yard, composting debris, removing debris from storm drains, filling the house with plants, constructing a rain barrel or hanging a bird feeder.

An internet search provides information on “green” initiatives, conservation practices and tree seedling and transplanting.

Residents are also encouraged to walk or bike more often, conserve water, use less electricity, stop using bottled water and plastic bags, reduce trash, and recycle more. Read the guidelines provided by Middlesex County at www.middlesexcountynj.gov/recycleright  to confirm your recycling practices.
