MONROE – Monroe officials reported six new positive COVID-19 cases on May 5, bringing the total number of cases to 557, according to the Monroe Township Office of Emergency Management.

The new cases include three residents in long-term care facilities and three community wide. The age range of the cases are from 63 to 100. The cases include five females – a 63 year old, an 81 year old, a 95 year old, a 96 year old, and a 100 year old, and one male, a 71 year old.

Monroe has lost 66 residents to COVID-19, 50 in long-term care facilities, or 76%, and 16 community-wide.

Mayor Gerald Tamburro has proclaimed May as “Essential Worker Appreciation Month” through a proclamation.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude and recognize all essential workers who must continue to work to protect our community’s strength and well-being,” he said. “These workers in our community make me proud each and every day as they selflessly place themselves at risk for the good of all in our community and the surrounding area.”

Tamburro recognized the doctors, nurses, medical workers, essential workers, township emergency medical services, grocery store workers, pharmacists, police and firefighters, postal workers, restaurant employees, and all those who are keeping the community going.

“It is in times like these that we witness incredible acts of caring, compassion and courage as these workers exercise meticulous discipline to keep themselves, their families and those they serve as safe as possible,” he said. “We could not get through this without all of you and we are truly grateful for your service.”
