Woodbridge new positive COVID-19 cases continue to go down, vast majority of residents have recovered

coronavirus

WOODBRIDGE – Woodbridge officials reported 14 new positive COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of cases in the township to 1,392, according to Mayor John McCormac in his daily report on May 5.

“Since April 1, our average daily count of new cases has been 37 so 14 is welcome news,” he said. “Even in the last nine days when the numbers started really dropping consistently, we still had an average of almost 19 so 14 looks good by that comparison also. We cannot lose sight of the people who are still sick and we keep them in our thoughts and prayers, but we are happy to see the numbers going down.”

Township officials have contacted 598 residents, who tested positive for COVID-19.

“We know of 45 unfortunate deaths though that number has thankfully not changed in several days,” he said “Of the remaining 553, 447 are recovered and 69 are in recovery and 37 could not be reached. That is over 93% who are better or getting better and the rest just might not be answering their phones.”

The St. Joseph’s Nursing Home and Assisted Living Facility positive COVID-19 cases remain at 47. The township is reporting statistics from the nursing home separately.

The residents at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home devastated by COVID-19 were initially counted in the township’s statistics before residents were moved to another facility out of town on March 25. On April 16, residents started moving back home after a massive cleaning effort. On May 4, the last resident has moved back to the facility.

The township has lost 60 residents to COVID-19, which includes residents from St. Joseph’s Nursing Home.

McCormac, in his report, recognized Rahway Savings Institution a $10,000 contribution to We Feed Woodbridge Food Bank.

The mayor continues to urge neighbors to check on people who live alone and cannot leave their homes and to continue to follow the rules and guidelines for social distancing, good personal hygiene, proper disposal of trash and avoiding non-essential travel.
