The selection was made by a national board that is chaired by FEMA and consists of representatives from American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A., Jewish Federations of North America, Salvation Army and United Way Worldwide. The Middlesex County local board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high need areas around the country, according to information provided by the United Way.

A copy of the call for proposals can be found at www.uwcj.org or requested by emailing pdesiderio@uwcj.org. Completed applications are due back at United Way no later than 3 p.m. on May 15. Incomplete applications and applications submitted after the deadline will be returned.

Under the terms of the grant from the national board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must be private voluntary non-profits or units of government, be eligible to receive federal funds, have an accounting system, practice non-discrimination, have demonstrated the capacity to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and if they are a private voluntary organization, have a voluntary board, according to the statement.
