United Way of Central Jersey receives grants to support emergency food, shelter programs

United Way of Central Jersey (UWCJ) worked with executives at Banana Republic stores in North Brunswick and Old Bridge to organize a volunteer activity to support students at Acelero Head Start in South Amboy.

United Way of Central Jersey has been awarded federal funds made available through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program.

Middlesex County has been chosen to receive two awards: $273,892 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county, and $390,491 to assist county residents affected by COVID–19.

The selection was made by a national board that is chaired by FEMA and consists of representatives from American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A., Jewish Federations of North America, Salvation Army and United Way Worldwide. The Middlesex County local board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high need areas around the country, according to information provided by the United Way.

A copy of the call for proposals can be found at www.uwcj.org or requested by emailing pdesiderio@uwcj.org. Completed applications are due back at United Way no later than 3 p.m. on May 15. Incomplete applications and applications submitted after the deadline will be returned.

Under the terms of the grant from the national board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must be private voluntary non-profits or units of government, be eligible to receive federal funds, have an accounting system, practice non-discrimination, have demonstrated the capacity to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and if they are a private voluntary organization, have a voluntary board, according to the statement.
