Aberdeen police department launches voluntary camera registry program

ABERDEEN – The Aberdeen Township Police Department has announced the launch of a voluntary program that enables residents and business operators to register their exterior surveillance cameras with the police department.

According to a press release, in the event of a crime, police may contact residents and business operators who have registered their cameras to determine if the cameras may have recorded an event relevant to the investigation.

“This registry is designed to not only deter crime, but also to give our officers the ability to resolve crimes or other emergency incidents throughout Aberdeen faster and more effectively,” Police Chief Rick Derechailio said.

The registry does not provide anyone, including police, ongoing access to registered cameras, according to the press release.

“Access (to the cameras’ footage) is only granted on an as-needed basis in the course of an investigation,” Derechailo said.

All information that is required from residents and business operators will remain confidential and will not be shared outside of the police department, according to the press release. For more information and to register online, visit www.aberdeennj.org
