Long-time Hopewell residents will remember how Aunt Chubby’s Luncheonette served as a community meeting place that would feed everyone, whether or not they could pay.
Lyn Faruggia has transformed the old luncheonette into a non-profit community organization, which is currently selling take-out food but also creating free lunches and groceries distributed to 30 Hopewell families in need. Hopewell churches, a local doctor, and borough officials helped to identify people in need, according to information provided by Bob Harris.
The program has been funded for one month by local donors, but in order to continue, more funds are required. Donations can be made directly to Aunt Chubby’s Café, or for tax-exemption to the Chubby’s Project, Calvary Baptist Church, 3 E. Broad St., Hopewell 08525.
The gardeners at the St. Michael’s Community Garden will be growing vegetables for this and other projects, and other growers in Hopewell are encouraged to donate extra produce.
