Chief Michael McMahon of the Hillsborough Township Police Department released a statement last week reacting to the death of George Floyd at the hands of four Minneapolis police officers on May 25.

“The members of the Hillsborough Police Department are deeply saddened by the tragic images and events surrounding George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis. The actions observed and the lack of action taken by the other officers on scene is reprehensible and contrary to our training.

“The Hillsborough Township Police Department is a professional organization that is committed to serving and protecting all individuals regardless of race, religion, gender, social or economic status. We are an accredited police agency recognized for adhering to the best practices in law enforcement as defined by the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police.

“Our officers continue to receive bi-annual training in use of force, along with training in cultural diversity, racial profiling, ethics and de-escalation. We follow the Attorney General’s guidelines on Internal Affairs investigations as well as the Early Warning System which is an ongoing review of officer conduct. Accountability is a cornerstone of our organization.

“This tragic event pains all of us and the actions of those officers is in no way representative of the dedication men and women of the Hillsborough Township Police Department. We are proud of the positive relationship that we have forged with our community and we will continue to serve you with the utmost professionalism every day.”
