SAYREVILLE – The names of two Democrats and two Republicans will appear on the July 7 primary ballot to seek available three-year terms on the Sayreville Borough Council in November.

According to information provided by the Middlesex County Clerk’s Office, Republicans Karen Bailey Bebert and Danielle Zaleski are looking to challenge incumbent Democrats Vince Conti and Mary Novak for two available three-year seats on Sayreville’s governing body, while Conti and Novak seek to retain their positions on the council.

Both parties’ candidates are running unopposed in their own primaries. The Democratic and Republican candidates on the primary ballots will be expected to face each other in the general election on Nov. 3.

Bebert and Zaleski are making their first bids for Borough Council. According to information provided by the Sayreville Republican Organization, they are both lifelong Sayreville residents and graduates of Sayreville War Memorial High School.

Novak, who holds the position of council president in 2020, first served on the council from 1995 to 2000 before rejoining in 2012 and is the longest-serving member of the governing body. Conti was appointed to the governing body this year to complete a one-year, unexpired term, and is seeking his first full three-year term on the Borough Council.

Democrats hold a 5-1 majority on the Borough Council and the mayor’s office.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the primary election will mostly be conducted by vote by mail. After Sayreville voters receive their vote by mail ballot from the county and fill it out, they may mail their ballot from their home, drop it off at the Middlesex County Board of Elections in East Brunswick, or deliver it to a drop box location, according to the county.

According to the county, some polling places will be open on the day of the primary, but voters will only be able to cast their ballots in person through a provisional paper ballot.
