Students earn annual scholarships from the Cranbury Lions Club

The Cranbury Lions Club scholarship committee has selected five Cranbury students as winners of their annual scholarships for 2020.

Each year, members give a total of $5,000 through several scholarships from the organization’s scholarship program, according to Lions Club President John Ryan.

The scholarships earned by the students for 2020 are the Stan Thomas Scholarships, Dr. David C. Tudor Science Scholarship, Todd M. Beamer Memorial Scholarship and Peter Turner Memorial Scholarship.

Stan Thomas was a lifelong Cranbury resident who shared his time and energy with volunteer organizations in Cranbury, namely Boy scout Troop 52, his church and the Lions Club, according to club officials.

Two Cranbury School middle school students were awarded $250 each for the Stan Thomas scholarship.

Dr. Tudor, a Cranbury Lion, was a practicing veterinarian on Station Road, as well as, a professor at Rutgers. The Cranbury Lions established this scholarship in his name to be given annually to a high school senior, who will major in science at an accredited college and or university.

Catherine McDonnell was awarded the $1,500 Dr. David C. Tudor Scholarship. She is a senior at Princeton High School (PHS).

According to Ryan, McDonnell received excellent grades, has worked in various scientific projects, participated in a significant amount of community service and exemplified leadership.

Todd Beamer, a Cranbury resident and Lion, gave his life on Sept. 11, 2001, leading other passengers in overpowering the hijackers of United Airlines Flight 93. This scholarship is given annually to a high school senior who has demonstrated citizenship in the community.

For the Todd M. Beamer Scholarship, Ryan McCormick received $1,500; he is also a senior at PHS.

McCormick has an excellent academic record, participated in various school activities, worked with special needs children, demonstrated exceptional leadership, volunteerism and service – all in line with the criteria of the scholarship, according to Ryan.

The Peter Turner Memorial Scholarship is given to a worthy student who is in financial need.

“We do not reveal the recipient’s name. Each year we rename this scholarship in honor of a recently passed Lion. Peter was a long term Cranbury Lion who demonstrated our motto of ‘We Serve,’ ” Ryan said.
