Cranbury firefighters battled a fire at Cranbury Pizza in downtown Cranbury on June 19.

Firefighters responded to an initial call at 6:38 p.m. of a fire at the restaurant building located at 63 N. Main St. Workers at the pizzeria and tenants in the apartment, which is part of the building, were current occupants at the time of the fire. They were able to get out of the structure in time, according to the Cranbury Fire Department.

There were no injuries to the occupants and firefighters on scene, according to Cranbury Fire official Sam DiStasio.

Information was not available on the total count of the tenants at the time and the timeframe when the firefighters gained control of the fire.

“To gain control of the fire took a little more time with a fire such as that. We did have a little trouble finding where the fire was,” DiStasio said. “There was a lot of smoke involved with this fire and there was a lot of structural damage to the building.”

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but an investigation is currently being conducted.

“The Middlesex County Fire Marshal’s Office is working on that investigation,” DiStasio said.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
